HMS "Beagle" 1838

 A Painting in Oils

by Ron SCOBIE A.S.M.A.

This artwork was painted for display at the Australian Society of Marine Artists' Annual Exhibition held at the Queensland Maritime Museum in Brisbane 2006.  It shows HMS "Beagle" approaching Fort Macquarie (now the site of Sydney's Opera House).  The rock behind the ship was demolished to build Fort Denison.

CHARLES DARWIN ANNIVERSARY

2009 is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin.  The London Museum of Natural History requested permission to use this image of "Beagle" in their promotional material for a Darwin Exhibition.  Huge posters were made and a number of items showing this image of "Beagle" were produced for sale.  Among these items were notebooks with a pen, jigsaw puzzles, and prints of the painting.

The Perth Mint requested permission to use this image in their Newsletter advertising the production of a silver coin to celebrate the Darwin anniversary.

The image is also being used by a specialist Philatelic Association in Britain to mark the introduction  by the British Post Office of  postage stamps to mark this anniversary.

Many Museums, Exhibitions, magazines and publications around the world requested permission to use this image during 2009.
